Introduced at the Paris Motor Show in 1971, production of the 15 continued until 1979 alongside the 17. Powered by Renault’s 1289cc engine, fitted with a twin choke Weber carburettor and coupled to a four speed synchromesh gearbox driving the front wheels. Mechanically, the motor car was identical to Renault’s sporty 12TS and a top speed of 94mph was apparently achievable with a 0-60 time of 13.6 seconds but with a very acceptable fuel consumption of 31.8mpg. In the UK it was some £250 more expensive than the Ford Capri. Despite more power, attractive styling, high level of equipment and comfort and safety of the Renaults, the Ford swept the market. Here then is a good opportunity to sample a fine example of a Renault 15, one that many may have missed at the time.

Possibly the most original and low mileage Renault 15 in existence, this sunshine yellow example was first registered in 1973, lightly used up until 1985 and then put into dry storage for the following twenty nine years. In 2014 it was recommissioned and passed its MOT test with no advisories. Since September of that year, it has formed part of a private collection, used only occasionally for classic car events and stored in a dehumidified building. With an odometer reading of just 18273 miles, we are told that it is totally original and outstanding condition, and has never been welded, clearly benefitting from a Ziebart anti-rust wax treatment when new.

The Renault is supplied with the driver’s handbook, past MOT test certificates, old tax discs, R15 and 17 sales brochures and price list, a V5C registration certificate and others.
